Châteauneuf-du-Pape uses 13 grape varieties.
Black grenache dominates the reds, with Mourvèdre and Syrah.
For the whites: white grenache, clairette, bourboulenc and roussanne.
The grapes have to be hand-picked.
The red wines are complex, powerful, full-bodied and well-balanced. Full-bodied on the palate, they develop a powerful nose with notes of undergrowth. The intense garnet-red colour is the result of a wide range of aromas of ripe fruit (blackcurrant, blackberry), spices and roasting. The best vintages can be enjoyed in bottle for several decades.
The golden-coloured white wines are rich and aromatic, full-bodied and slightly mellow.
Their strong fruit and floral notes evolve towards honey and woody aromas over the years.
